CLM-0003 — Angels and devils each occur 88 times
COUNT_CONFIRMED_INFERENCE_NOT_SUPPORTED Audit report · deterministic reproduction
1 · Claim as commonly stated
The words for angel (malak) and devil (shaytan) each occur exactly 88 times.
Source note: Widely circulated in numerical-miracle literature and popular media; earliest precise source unverified, attribution left open rather than guessed.
2 · Reproduction method
Declared counting-rule matrix, executed against corpus quran:hafs-kufan:v1. Full rules, counts, and sample locations: EXP-0008, EXP-0012.
3 · Result
Reproduced exactly under the diacritized-lemma rule: مَلَك = 88 and شَيْطان = 88. Other declared rules do not reproduce it (malak: surface 61, lemma 88, root 206; shaytan: surface 0, lemma 88, root 88).
4 · Sensitivity to counting rules
HOLDS_UNDER_ONE_DECLARED_RULE, BUT THE BASE RATE EXPLAINS IT (EXP-0012). The count is exact and reproducible: مَلَك = 88 and شَيْطان = 88. What EXP-0012 adds is the context that makes a count meaningful or not. Among lemmas occurring at least 20 times, 1,640 DISTINCT PAIRS already share an exact count — 1.3% of all such pairs. At the value 88 specifically there are FOUR lemmas: angel (مَلَك), devil (شَيْطان), 'to do' (فَعَلَ) and 'parable' (مَثَل) — six available pairings, of which only the semantically striking one entered circulation. And the rate is not a property of this text: on matched frequency bands, Sahih al-Bukhari shows 1.5% and al-Mutanabbi's Diwan 2.2%, against the Qur'an's own surface rate of 1.6%. Bukhari alone contains 40,912 ready-made exact-equality pairs.
5 · Statistical context
NOT_SIGNIFICANT_AS_DISCOVERED. A pair named in advance and then found exactly equal would be notable — roughly a 1-in-77 event at this frequency band. This pair was not named in advance; it was found by searching a text that contains thousands of exact ties. Of the five semantic pairs the battery tested, one matched, which is what searching produces. No significance is claimed.
6 · Best argument in favor
The count itself is exactly right, needs no special pleading, and survives the one rule declared in advance — which is more than seven of the twelve famous claims managed.
7 · Strongest objection
Three other lemmas also occur exactly 88 times, and two unrelated classical Arabic texts produce exact-equality pairs at the same rate. The equality is real; the inference from it is not.
8 · All recorded objections
- Three other lemmas also occur exactly 88 times, and two unrelated classical Arabic texts produce exact-equality pairs at the same rate. The equality is real; the inference from it is not.
- With thousands of countable properties and free choice of counting rule, exact matches are expected somewhere by chance alone; only rules declared before counting carry weight.
- The claim is never stated with its counting rule, so any test of it must supply one on the claimant's behalf.
9 · Final status
COUNT_CONFIRMED_INFERENCE_NOT_SUPPORTED
10 · Public summary
The count is exactly right: angels 88, devils 88. The conclusion usually drawn from it is not supported — the Qur'an contains 1,640 such exact ties among common words, three other words also occur 88 times, and unrelated Arabic books produce ties at the same rate.
